Hinterland & Coalfields

Head inland and beyond the ranges to discover MORE of what the region can offer. This prosperous Coal Country contains a growing number of open cut and underground coal mines producing black gold — a valuable industry providing the life blood for the entire region and Mackay City.

Moranbah is a relatively young town, purpose built to serve the coal industry. Historic Nebo and Clermont are also thriving thanks to current demand for coal, although their history is long and interesting. You can explore the mines at Moranbah's Peak Downs Mine or Clermont's Blair Athol Mine on a guided tour with local experts. Located within 1 to 3 hours west & south/west of Mackay City, along the Peak Downs Highway — there is plenty to explore in the area. Try your hand at gold detecting, join an interesting coal mine tour, experience one of Queenslands largest rodeos and camp drafts, or throw back a coldie with the locals on the verandah of the historic Nebo Hotel.

You will be welcomed by warm smiles, interesting characters and stories, historic monuments and a vast and changing landscape.
